Bellwether 2016

One town always picks the winning president...

Yes

project trailer: www.bellwether2016.org
Knight Foundation entry: http://kng.ht/19MCrmR

Bellwether investigates why one place in America has consistently voted for the winning president -- Vigo County, Indiana. The county seat, Terre Haute, claims the nickname "The Crossroads of America". What will it tell us about our nation in 2016.

The web-series will integrate broadcast-quality documentary segments profiling influential and representative people, places, events, and activities with locally generated, lower-production value video "postcards" & "portraits". Additional resources will include opinion polls, text articles, historic electoral results, demographics, and economic data. The website will go live in November 2015 and track the following campaign year through the lens of life in this emblematic corner of the American heartland.

Red & Blue

2

Red vs. Blue presents a possible design dynamic to explore, however, politics in Vigo County are more personal and friendly than confrontational. The program doesn't take sides or depict a "fight". The program will be built on the voices and POV of various local individuals.

The center of downtown Terre Haute, "The Crossroads" is where two of the most important national highways intersected in the days before the interstate -- US 40, "The National Road", running east and west; and US 41, the main north-south route between Chicago & New Orleans.

The city of Terre Haute is heavily democratic (donkey?), a stronghold for union labor and maintains the feeling of a rustbelt industrial center (despite the loss of many industries and factories). The surrounding rural area is mostly farmland, principally producing corn, and strongly conservative (elephant?).

Ballot imagery makes sense, but I'm not sure a single iconic image will conjure "ballot" or voting booth in every mind. The American flag also seems like a possible element -- although it may feel too "easy".

The Vigo County courthouse is a strong local icon, but means little or nothing to anyone outside of the region, however, it could echo the White House?
